Going on a date is always an exciting experience; especially
if you are dating a lady from another country in her own country. In Ukraine , as
well as in any other country, it is always best to extend the lady the dating
courtesies she is accustomed to. You can never go wrong that way. People in Ukraine say
that you are judged first by your looks and manners before you are judged by
your intelligence. So, always make a good first impression on your first date
and take note of the Ukrainian dating traditions.
In the United
States and in many European countries,
dating traditions have moved towards emancipation thus greatly affecting them.
But this is not the case with Ukrainian women. Although many of them are
financially independent, they still expect their men to court them. Ukrainian
women also expect their men to be attentive to them, the traditional Ukrainian
way.
Now, understanding Ukrainian dating courtesy traditions
means understanding your Ukrainian fiancées expectations and meeting them. Lets
say, you decide to go out with your lady for a dinner. You pick her up at her
place or meet at your hotel, than you go to the restaurant together. First of
all she would expect you pay for her ticket in public transportation or to pay
the cab driver, that is if you take the cab.
In fact, as you will surely discover, paying for your lady
is one of the major Ukrainian dating courtesy traditions. There is one great
rule to go by: you pray, I pay. This way you will never make a mistake. It is
not because Ukrainian ladies are poor or greedy. Simply, such is the tradition.
If a man courts a lady, he has to cover all their dating expenses.
Apart from paying all the dating bills, you are also
expected to show some gentlemanly manners -you open the door for her or offer
her a hand when she gets out of the taxi. At the restaurant, move her chair and
get her seated first. Such small things are essential for your dating success.
Ukrainian women, although they are thought to be smart and independent, still
have traditional attitudes about courtship. They still like to feel feminine.
In addition to paying for all the bills related to your
dating, you are also expected to give your Ukrainian lady some small gifts. If
you are not celebrating a major event, you may send her candies and flowers.
Be careful about your choice of flowers though, and remember
to only send a bouquet with an odd numbered set. An even-numbered bouquet of
flowers is only given at burials in Ukraine .
Also, do not give yellow flowers, unless your Ukrainian lady
is very specific about it being her favorite color. Yellow is the traditional
color in Ukraine
for departing and separating. A superstitious Ukrainian date would even think
it is a bad sign, and may even consider your relationship doomed, if you send
yellow flowers.
